An inside look at DUKES: our food and drink

Afternoon tea at DUKES Hotel, LondonAs we mentioned in a previous post, one of the pieces of criteria behind DUKES being a five star hotel is the ability to provide our guests with dining options whatever day you stay with us and whatever time it may be.

London is a city that never sleeps, and so if you’re checking out early and need something savoury and substantial to set you up for the day, or have spent all evening at the theatre and need a little something to satisfy your sweet tooth before you get into bed, you can rest assured we can provide it all at DUKES.

For this reason, it’s no real surprise that food and drink is really important to us. We want everyone who spends time with us to feel as though there’s something to eat and drink that’s perfectly suited to their individual needs.

And it’s because of this why we have so many different options available.

DUKES Bar

Our bar is a favourite with our guests and locals actually some guests come to DUKES just to experience our martinis. In the words of others it’s legendary, enviable and as the New York Times once said it’s the bar “which some say concocts one of the world’s best Martinis”.

Open from 2pm to 11pm Monday to Saturday (4pm to 10.30pm on Sundays), spending time in DUKES Bar is somewhat of an event. You aren’t simply dropping by for a quick beer or glass of wine – we want you to savour the whole experience; to enjoy time testing our bartenders’ knowledge to create a drink that’s perfectly suited to you.

Having a drink in DUKES Bar is in many ways about harking back to a time before mobile phones, the internet or television. It’s about choosing a seat, having a drink made for you, and wiling away the time with your loved one, a group of friends or simply by yourself.

GBR

Headed up by renowned chef Nigel Mendham, GBR is a truly ‘Great British Restaurant’. It’s all about providing a dining experience built around homegrown produce from here on our wonderful British Isles, or menus that follow – or are inspired by – some of the country’s most traditional dishes.

An all-day dining experience (you can grab breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner here), the team at GBR don’t try to overcomplicate the dishes on offer. They know what works, what our guests want and bring the two together perfectly.

And with the bar overlooking the restaurant, if you’d prefer a few light snacks with a drink here instead of a meal, we’d be only too happy to oblige.

Afternoon tea

A truly British occasion, afternoon tea is something we can all enjoy. After all, who doesn’t enjoy taking some time out of their day to eat sandwiches, cakes and pastries and drink tea?

However, knowing that everyone has different tastes, we’ve produced a variety of options when it comes to afternoon tea.

For instance, we have our DUKES afternoon tea, which includes an array of sandwiches, warm scones and a variety of pastries served with a choice of tea. However, for something a little more ‘relaxing’ you can enjoy our ‘gin and tonic afternoon tea’ or our ‘champagne afternoon tea’ – all the same delights to eat, but with an alcoholic alternative to tea!

Served in our elegant drawing room and conservatory, there aren’t many better ways to spend an afternoon in London.

Picnic in the park

We really do love it when our guests stay with us for a meal or a drink, but we also know London has a whole host of sights and attractions to take in, including a vast array of beautiful parks.

Not wishing for you to miss out on the culinary delights our chefs create, we provide a particularly popular option for our guests to take a picnic to one of the nearby Royal Parks.

A real decadent treat, your personal butler will meet you at the park, lay out your rug and picnic basket and then serve your drinks before leaving you to enjoy the great outdoors of our city with a selection of tempting treats.

Cognac and cigar garden

Open throughout the week from 6pm to 11pm, our outdoor cognac and cigar area is particularly popular for those looking for a break away from the hustle and bustle of London life.

Providing our guests with the ability to sample some of the world’s finest cigars alongside some truly favourable cognac, if you’re a fan of a cigar, we’re confident saying you’ll be hard-pressed to find somewhere better to enjoy one in London.

Being real foodies at DUKES – and with a particular passion for high quality drinks, too – we aim to show this to each and every one of our guests. Only wanting you to have the best dining experiences possible, we do our utmost to cater for every need, no matter how diverse it may be. Just ask!

How to visit London with small children (and have the best time)

An external view of Hamleys on Regent's Street, LondonIt’s a well-known fact that London is one of the most visited cities in the world. In 2017 the city saw over 19 million international visitors make at least one trip to London. That’s a huge figure – and in context, it’s around one third of the UK’s population visiting the comparatively small capital.

One of the city’s main attractions is the fact there’s something for all. Young or old, first visit or fiftieth, foodie or outdoorsy, you can truly flourish in London.

And this is without doubt the case for families. Travelling to London with children be a truly unforgettable experience (for all the right reasons!).

As with any trip in which children are in tow, a little preparation can go a long way – and with a large focus on accommodating families here at DUKES, we like to think we know at least a few ways to make your trip to London with children as great as it can be.

Choose the right hotel

And it can all start with the hotel itself.

Given the brilliant transport links we have in London, to a certain degree it’s almost irrelevant where it is you’re staying in any of the central or outer boroughs. Of course, everyone wants to stay close to the action (and for the most part, we’d always recommend it – the least travelling you have to do with children, the better!), but choosing the right place to stay is arguably more important.

We’re fortunate enough to be well-located in central London at DUKES, making a whole host of attractions easily accessible, but we’re also particularly family orientated.

Rooms with adjoining doors that give you and your little ones separate space whilst still being connected. Children’s food and drink from breakfast through to dinner. Readily accessible services, such as childcare (in fact, our family escapes package comes with five hours complementary childcare).

It’s these things we know families benefit from, and when you’re travelling with children, you need to make sure they’re all readily accessible wherever it is you choose to stay. You could choose to stay right next door to the main attraction you’re planning on visiting, but if the hotel is not in anyway child-friendly, is it really that great of a choice?

Do a little research before you arrive

When travelling with children, it’s so easy to think that days need to be spent doing activities that offer no excitement for adults, or that meals are bland and boring.

But when you’re visiting London, this really doesn’t have to be the case.

Take the last point. There are so many fantastic restaurants dotted right around the city that cater for both children and adults alike. The ever-popular Rainforest Cafe is a great example. The surroundings will keep little ones gripped, whilst the food on offer has something for all tastes (and there’s alcohol available, too, should it be needed!).

With the first point, one of the parts of being a parent is doing things that offer little value to you but excite your children immensely – but there are so many family-friendly activities and attractions in London that the whole family can have a brilliant time together.

Tower of London. London Eye. British Museum. Warner Bros Studio Tour. Natural History Museum. Seeing a show in the West End.

There’s more than a long weekend’s worth of family activities there, but we’ve only really picked out the most popular attractions.

And of course, it doesn’t matter how old you are, a trip to Hamleys is without doubt a brilliant experience. A must for all families.

Create an itinerary

Following on from the last point, with so much to do, if you don’t plan, you can risk doing nothing.

Slow, lazy mornings can be great as a couple, but when you have some excited children, you need at least some type of plan as to what to do and where to go to ensure you fit everything in.

It may seem a little structured for some, but particularly those families with at least two or three children – and especially children who have ideas of what they want to do themselves – an itinerary can ensure everyone gets a say in what you’re going to be doing when you’re here.

And when everyone has a say, everyone can be happy, knowing that at some point during the trip, they’ll be doing something that they are particularly looking forward to.

Visiting London with children

If you’ve ever thought of visiting London with children but not made plans as you believed it wouldn’t be suitable, please do rethink your trip. London is one of the world’s most wonderful cities, regardless of almost every possible requirement or expectation you might have.

Home to everything from expansive tranquil gardens through to the world’s greatest toy shops (we’ll repeat it – definitely do visit Hamleys!), a visit to London with small children can be a magical and truly memorable experience.

Join us for St Patrick’s Day!

Two people in Irish-themed outfitsOn Saturday 17th March, the world will come together to celebrate the annual event that is St Patrick’s Day – and there are few better places to do so than right here in London.

Traditionally celebrating the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, the event has evolved into a celebration of the entire Irish culture; the points, intricacies and all things wonderfully enviable about our neighbour from across the Irish sea.

With a wave of green so often seen throughout the streets of London, a stay in the city when it’s St Patrick’s Day can make for a fantastically memorable experience for a whole host of reasons.

The annual St Patrick’s Day parade

And one of the most popular has to be the brilliant St Patrick’s Day parade that happens every year right in the centre of London. Into its sixteenth year, the parade regularly attracts crowds of over 100,000, and this year it’s been speculated that it could be the largest ever.

Whilst the event is known as a ‘parade’, most would agree it’s most like a festival now – especially as this year it’s stretching over three days and extending out of the original Trafalgar Square location to include all 33 London boroughs in some way, shape or form. It’s going to be almost impossible to not get caught up in the St Patrick’s Day spirit over the three days!

One of our favourite parts of this year’s parade, there’s going to be a dedicated family zone in Pall Mall all afternoon from 12pm to 6pm on Sunday 18th. Including everything from games and stilt walkers through to workshops and stories of traditional Irish tales, just like the event in its entirety, the zone is completely free for families to make use of.

With the parade itself taking place on the Sunday from 12pm, the procession of floats, bands, dancers and more will make the 1.5 mile journey from Piccadilly to Whitehall taking in numerous locations and landmarks along the way.

Always a fantastic event, add into this the parade’s focus on women this year (‘#BehindEveryGreatCity’ is the hashtag being used throughout the event for people to share stories of their own about inspirational Irish women) and it’s definitely one not to be missed – and one that’s sure to satisfy your needs for a bit of Irish culture!

Six Nations Rugby

Whilst the parade is undoubtedly one not to miss, it’s hard to argue against the fact the last match of the Six Nations will be a highlight of the weekend for many – not only is it on St Patrick’s Day itself, but it’s between England and Ireland!

Taking place at Twickenham Stadium, the stadium has a long reputation as being one of the most favourable locations for rugby fans. Able to hold 82,000 people (it’s second only in size to Wembley), and whilst England have more wins over Ireland on their Test record, at the time of writing this the odds are very much even for either team to win.

Whether you’re watching live at Twickenham or on TV, you can expect an electric atmosphere to ripple through the city until the very last kick of the game (at least!).

Staying with us at DUKES

St Patrick’s Day is a brilliant time to visit London; getting a taste of Irish culture whilst in one of the most visited cities in the world is definitely an enviable experience

Being a short walk from the centre of the St Patrick’s Day parade activities at Trafalgar Square and with it only 30 minutes from nearby Green Park tube station to Twickenham Stadium, however you’re planning to celebrate St Patrick’s Day this year, we’d love to see you staying with us at DUKES London.

And with our current 3 for 2 offer giving you the ability to stay for an extra night for free – and that includes in our suites – along with our special selection of Irish beer, whisky and Irish coffees at GBR, you could be close to all of the action whilst knowing you can retreat to a little piece of luxury every night (and always start and finish it with an Irish tipple or two!).

How can you treat your mum this Mother’s Day? Let us help!

A mother and daughter enjoying afternoon tea at DUKES LondonOur mums have spent years upon years caring for us. From the very first moment they hold us in their arms, there’s a love that is so strong it’s impenetrable. A mother’s love for her children is unconditional.

As we grow older, we try to show our mums how much they mean to us. We draw them pictures as children, start buying them gifts when we’re teenagers, and it gets to the point where we realise the best thing we can do to show our mum we appreciate her is to spend time together.

It’s for this exact reason why we’ve pulled together a package to help you treat your mum to a wonderful night or two in London as a gift this Mother’s Day.

So what should your mum expect as her treat when staying with us this Mother’s Day?

A West End Show

What better way to spend a night in London than by having tickets to the theatre? It’s the traditionally perfect way to enjoy your evening, and one that is so perfectly representative of a trip to London.

In our package, you have two tickets for one of the three shows: Mamma Mia, Kinky Boots, or 42nd Street. With both evening and matinee shows available, the choice of which to see and when to do so completely up to you (and it’s a hard one – all three of them are widely regarded as some of the best shows in London, and we’ve all got our preferences between afternoon or evening performances!).

Champagne afternoon tea

One of the most quintessentially British things you can do, afternoon tea is such a brilliant way to while away your afternoon – and it’s made only more appealing with a glass of champagne!

Available to enjoy in either our GBR restaurant or our Drawing Rooms, you’ll be tasting everything from quaint finger sandwiches filled with the highest quality ingredients through to warm scones with delicious accompaniments. The afternoon tea is an iconic tradition and so we don’t try to revolutionise it at DUKES London – we simply make sure you leave feeling you’ve had the best afternoon tea experience you could possibly have.

Floris Hyacinth & Bluebell candle

If you feel afternoon tea followed by a West End show just needs a little something to finish the present off, a Floris Hyacinth & Bluebell candle should do just that perfectly.

One of the world’s most respected fragrance brands, Floris was founded in 1730 and the company is still owned and run by the same family today, nine generations on. A truly remarkable story, and one that shows the love and attention for the brand the family has, this is something that is clear in every candle produced.

Discounted rooms

We know everyone has different needs when staying in a hotel, so rather than stipulating you have to stay in a certain room with our Mother’s Day package, we’re instead letting you choose – and providing a 10% discount on whichever room you decide on.

What’s more, we appreciate not everyone can make it to London on Mother’s Day itself, so this is all available between 9th and 25th March 2018.

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to visit London as there’s so much to see and do that every mum should find something perfect for them. But with afternoon tea, a West End show, a fantastic room and a beautiful candle, we think most mums would be over the moon at spending time with their beloved children in such fantastic settings.

We’re always proud that our Mother’s Day packages are extremely popular. See the offer for 2018 in full and book now.

10 quotes about London from inspirational women

A postcard with an image of Charlotte BronteInternational Women’s Day prompted us to take a few moments out to think about all the brilliant things the ladies of the world have done, are doing and will do.

We’re so fortunate to see inspirational women making huge strides in their industries here in London; women changing the status quo and truly standing out. We’ve seen it first hand at DUKES – our Managing Director is the hugely inspirational Debrah Dhugga, a working mum from the North East who has been leading the charge here at DUKES London for over 8 years.

And whilst location might only play a minor role in success, it’s often hard to get away from the fact that so many inspirational women have fallen in love with London.

There are a huge number of quotes from women about our wonderful city, and we’ve pulled together 10 of our favourites, giving a wonderfully insightful view of London through the eyes of some of the world’s most inspirational women.

  1. “The interesting thing about London is that there are always stylish surprises around every corner.” – Natalie Massenet

  2. “I like the spirit of this great London which I feel around me. Who but a coward would pass his whole life in hamlets; and for ever abandon his faculties to the eating rust of obscurity?” – Charlotte Brontë

  3. “I think London’s sexy because it’s so full of eccentrics” – Rachel Weisz

  4. “One of the the things she most liked about the city – apart from all its obvious attractions, the theatre, the galleries, the exhilarating walks by the river – was that so few people ever asked you personal questions.” – Julia Gregson

  5. “There’s nowhere else like London. Nothing at all, anywhere.” – Vivienne Westwood

  6. “As an actress and comedienne, I’m a huge fan of the theatre and the Tricycle in Kilburn is my favourite in London. I dragged my kids to a performance of ‘Twelfth Night’ there, where they handed out pizza. Who knew that all it takes to get children interested in Shakespeare is a snack?” – Arabella Weir

  7. “The City seems so much more in earnest: its business, its rush, its roar are such serious things, sights and sounds. The City is getting its living – the West-End but enjoying its pleasure.” – Charlotte Brontë

  8. “When I was a teenager in Iceland people would throw rocks and shout abuse at me because they thought I was weird. I never got that in London no matter what I wore.” – Bjork

  9. “I divide my time between all the mud and open space in Surrey and the social life and work in London, particularly Chelsea, which still has the same village feel that it had in the swinging Sixties.” – Mary Quant

  10. “The 2012 London Olympic Games fostered a generation of hope. I witnessed women participating for the very first time, representing every nation.” – Jackie Joyner-Kersee

Come and see first hand why so many fall in love with London. Millions visit every year, so take advantage of one of our offers and come discover one of the world’s most loved cities for yourself.
